Fall Canyon League Meeting/Belated All-Star Game

In order to get the league back to a happy place, Joe English has suggested a fall meeting to address issues and/or stage a cage fighting tournament (my money's on Erin - chicks use their nails!). Currently, it looks like an upcoming Sunday in September or early October is the best time for everybody. My vote for location is Anaheim, either at the National Sports Grill near the Big A or in one of the Stadium Lofts apartments across from the stadium (we can pretend to be potential homeowners - they're so desperate for buyers right now that they'll do anything).

If you'd like to have an issue or idea addressed, leave a comment (if you don't have a Blogger/Google account, just say who you are at the top of the 'anonymous' message). I'll post a tentative meeting agenda on the website in the week leading up to the meeting.

Since it hasn't been played, we can also play the All-Star game and kill two birds with one stone. I vote for Mark Prior as the starter for my team.

I think that if we are actually trying to have a serious meeting that doing it in a public place is a bad idea. For anything to actually get accomplished there needs to be an agenda, meeting leader (to keep things on topic), etc. SF.

Do you have any suggestions for a meeting place? I'm still down with meeting down south, so if there's someplace with privacy that you're knowledgable about, let us know.

The idea of a league meeting sounds like a good one to me. I'm willing to drive down to the O.C. to accomodate those southsider's in the league. I can fit four passengers in my truck.

Why not just do it at my house if everyone wants to come down south. My house is only 1200 sq ft, but thats more than adequate to fit the 8 people that would actually show up.

I was going to run these by one or two of you, but I'll let the whole league take shots at these ideas.

1) To avoid games played way after deadlines, I suggest that each manager choose 2 other managers that they would trust to manage their teams that can be called upon as subs in case you cannot pay a game or round on time for whatever the reason. Choosing two managers would be necessary because one of the managers you choose may just happen to be your opponent in the series you are forced to miss. You would send this list to the commissioner and he would be responsible for contacting your substitute manager. Under this rule, you would be allowed one mulligan because anything more than one missed series and we might end up with two managers managing more than one team...after that one mulligan, HAL would take over and manage you team for any series you cannot make. The series with your substitute manager would be played on either Monday or Tuesday following the deadline. The series would be late, I grant you, but only 48 hours at the latest and it should not effect the ability for the following round to be played on time. If the series cannot be played within 48 hours by the substitute manager, then the manager who can play would face off against HAL on Wednesday.
Go ahead...take your best shots!

2) An alternative to idea #1 is to use a non-partisan individual who can manage games only for managers who cannot find the time to manage games within the two week window. This would solve any series being played well past the deadline and it could also resolve any possible mid-season manager resignations if he/she is deemed worthy and wants to take over a team eventually. I have an individual in mind, his name is Seth Weisen...and he might not solve the long term mid-season manager replacement problem, we all like Seth and I'm sure he might like to be able to manage games again at the very least. I have not contacted Seth, but I might give him a jingle tonight to see if he would be intrigued by the idea.

3) This idea does not solve the late series problem, but I'm just wondering if anyone would want to limit the draft in 2008 to a Free Agent round and two rookie rounds...based on the number of WP transactions this year, and the fact that 60 more players will end up in the WP after the 2007 draft, maybe the draft could be shortened every other year. The WP is stocked enough and the top prospect list is getting thinner by the year. I'm open to a change...maybe in odd numbered years we go 1 FA and 4 rookie, and 1 FA and 2 rookie in even numbered years...just a thought.

I like 4 rounds per year in the draft. But I think we should go back to the FA round every other year. So one year we have 4 rookie rounds and the next year 3 rookie rounds and 1 FA round. I do not think that simply playing a series simply because it is late is a good idea. I like vacations as I am sure a lot of you do as well, so I do not think I should have to have a fill-in manager play for my team because I want to leave town. SF.

I like vacations, too. If common courtesy is extended by both managers, and games can be played within a reasonable time frame after a deadline passes, then I have no problem with a short delay. But if we can't put in safeguards that will help us meet deadlines, or play games during a reasonable time frame, then why have deadlines at all? And I'll be at the league meeting whereever it is.

The draft in place has always worked, why change now? A league meeting during playoff series would be cool..

Just a couple of responses to some of the entries:

Have we settled on a decent Sunday this month for the league meeting? How about the 23rd?

Christian - I assume you were the anonymous poster who offered their home. That sounds good for me - I'll bring the wings.

Joe - I like the 'alternative managers' idea, but I'm thinking that we could also designate one member of the council (or a regular league member if they're too lazy) as the 'schedule czar'. Their responsibilities will include keeping track of the series played during each round and making an official notification to the league late in the round regarding unplayed series. If the individual managers do not contact him with a decent excuse (vacation, dead cat, etc.), then either the alternate manager or HAL will play the series. We should have a mulligan of 3 late series in a season and then no tolerance of tardiness after that. More than 3 late series should also result in the loss of position in the draft. Obviously, Loren's SE Asian internet connectivity is a unique issue, and I don't think it would be fair to hold his love of Indochina against him.

Joe - Honestly, I like the draft the way it is right now. We're getting more non-superstar players in the league, and the waiver pool is finally yielding some quality players that can help fill roster holes. The four rounds of the rookie draft really seems to be helping us find a good mix of current players/prospects, so unless the league really gets out of hand, I don't see a reason to change things there. I wouldn't have a problem with Christian's idea of making the FA round a bi-annual affair.

The 23rd would work for me.

The 23rd works for me as well.

Balt is available the 23rd, can host if necessary, are wives coming?

Joe Emmert said...

Wives are not welcome, but mistresses and gay lovers are...

We need to decide where we are going to have this lil shindig. Personally, I like Loren and appreciate his offering of his casa but I hate Fillmore, so if I can avoid driving to Fillmore I am happy with that.

Tully Moxness said...

Since it sounds like the 23rd works, why don't we just set that day at Christian's house as official. Now we just need to settle on a time. Sadly, there's an Angels/Mariners game at 12:35 that day, but I doubt we can squeeze that in as well. Do we just want to shoot for Noon?

Here's an unofficial headcount:

Me
Me Sr.
Loren
The Commish
Christian (obviously)
Joe English
Greg
Erin

I'll poll the Somers clan and bribe them to attend with a promised visit to a local tile establishment; I assume Colby won't be there unless he decides to squeeze in a poker tourney at the Bike.

Joe English said...

Maybe I'll get there earlier if we shoot for noon meeting...I can get in my series with SF head-to-head. That is if Christian is okay with that arrangement.

The 23rd huh. That's actually funny because I haven't been up to the SCV in over 3 monthes and we have to be up there for the day on the 22nd. But whatever you guys want to do is fine with me.
